In the past, it was common practice that the poor were given access to the fields that had been already harvested. Whatever was left after the harvest-, fruit, olives, grains, etc.- was available for those in need to gleen. The corners of the fields and the fields that it was not profitable to harvest were also designated for them
Gleaning was an answer to food insecurity but also an expression of ευσπλαχνία, the feeling of deep awareness of and sympathy for those who suffer coupled with the wish to relieve it.
Eυσπλαχνία (efsplahnia) , one of the most effective ways to reduce the insercurity and the fear.
